About HYPE

What Is Hyperliquid (HYPE)

Hyperliquid is a high-performance Layer 1 blockchain built for decentralized financial markets, particularly perpetual futures and spot cryptocurrency trading. Its native cryptocurrency, HYPE, powers network security, staking, transaction fees and several mechanisms that support the ecosystem’s growth.

Unlike conventional decentralized exchanges that rely on automated market makers, Hyperliquid operates fully on-chain order books designed to provide the speed and trading functionality associated with centralized exchanges. Its infrastructure also supports smart contracts, lending applications and markets linked to traditional financial assets.

Launched as a trading platform in 2023, Hyperliquid has evolved into a broader blockchain ecosystem. HYPE debuted in November 2024 through a community-focused airdrop and has since become an integral part of the network’s economic model.

How Does Hyperliquid Work?

How Does Hyperliquid Work?

Hyperliquid is an independent blockchain built specifically for financial applications. It uses HyperBFT, a custom consensus mechanism that enables validators to agree on transactions quickly while maintaining a shared, verifiable blockchain ledger.

Its architecture consists of two interconnected components:

HyperCore handles the network’s trading infrastructure, including perpetual futures, spot order books, margin calculations and liquidations. Orders are processed directly on-chain rather than through a centralized matching engine. The infrastructure is designed to support approximately 200,000 orders per second.

HyperEVM provides an Ethereum-compatible smart contract environment operating under the same blockchain consensus. Developers can build decentralized applications that interact with HyperCore’s liquidity and trading infrastructure without operating on a separate blockchain.

This combination allows Hyperliquid to support sophisticated financial services while maintaining transparent transaction execution. Developers have already expanded the ecosystem into lending, structured products and tokenized stocks and ETFs through integrations such as Ondo Finance.

What Is the HYPE Token Used For?

HYPE is the native asset of the Hyperliquid blockchain, with several functions connecting its utility to network activity.

  • Staking and security: Holders can delegate HYPE to validators, helping secure the blockchain while earning staking rewards.
  • Transaction fees: HYPE pays gas fees on HyperEVM, where users interact with smart contracts and decentralized applications.
  • Trading benefits: Staking HYPE can unlock trading fee discounts when eligible staking and trading accounts are linked.
  • Market deployment: Developers must stake substantial amounts of HYPE to launch permissionless perpetual markets under HIP-3 and outcome markets under HIP-4.
  • Governance: HYPE participates in the network’s governance framework, supporting decisions concerning protocol development and network parameters.

Importantly, traders do not need to hold HYPE to access most Hyperliquid perpetual futures markets. Trading commonly uses USDC as collateral, while HYPE serves primarily as the underlying network asset.

HYPE also differs from company equity. Holding the token does not provide ownership of Hyperliquid Labs or an automatic entitlement to exchange revenue.

Hyperliquid Perpetual Futures and Market Expansion

Perpetual futures are Hyperliquid’s flagship trading product. These derivative contracts allow traders to speculate on asset prices without owning the underlying cryptocurrencies. Unlike traditional futures, they have no fixed expiration date, and funding payments help keep contract prices aligned with their reference markets.

Hyperliquid supports long and short positions, leverage, limit orders and automated risk-management tools. Its on-chain order-book trading model makes trade execution and settlement publicly verifiable while providing an interface familiar to active derivatives traders.

The network has also expanded beyond cryptocurrency markets through two significant protocol upgrades.

HIP-3, introduced in October 2025, allows independent developers to launch perpetual markets referencing equities, commodities, indices and other assets. Market deployers generally must maintain a 500,000 HYPE stake, which can be penalized for certain violations.

HIP-4 extends the infrastructure to fully collateralized event and outcome contracts. After an initial limited mainnet rollout in May 2026, permissionless third-party deployment became available in August 2026. These contracts settle in USDC, while developers must bond HYPE to deploy markets.

Hyperliquid’s infrastructure is also reaching external applications. In August 2026, Coinbase integrated Hyperliquid perpetual markets into Base App, expanding access to eligible users through a separate trading interface.

HYPE Tokenomics and Supply

HYPE launched on November 29, 2024, through one of cryptocurrency’s largest community distributions. Approximately 310 million tokens, representing 31% of its initial maximum supply, were distributed to eligible users.

The token was introduced without a conventional public fundraising round or an initial allocation to venture capital investors.

Tokenomics Details
Token Hyperliquid (HYPE)
Blockchain Hyperliquid Layer 1
Launch date November 29, 2024
Initial maximum supply 1 billion HYPE
Genesis airdrop 31%
Future emissions and community rewards Approximately 38.9%
Core contributors Approximately 23.8%
Hyper Foundation budget 6%
Consensus mechanism Delegated Proof of Stake

Additional smaller allocations support community grants and ecosystem initiatives.

Core contributor tokens are subject to vesting schedules extending into 2027–2028, while future community emissions and staking rewards gradually affect circulating supply.

Consequently, investors should distinguish between HYPE’s original maximum supply and the amount currently circulating. Token unlocks can introduce additional selling pressure even when the broader network continues growing.

How Do HYPE Buybacks and Token Burns Work?

One of Hyperliquid’s most distinctive economic features is the relationship between trading activity and HYPE demand.

A substantial portion of protocol trading fees flows into the Assistance Fund, which automatically purchases HYPE through the network’s trading infrastructure. Tokens acquired by the fund are burned, permanently reducing their supply.

HyperEVM also burns transaction fees, providing another mechanism through which network activity can remove HYPE from circulation.

This creates a direct economic connection between platform usage and the token. Greater trading activity can generate more fees, supporting additional purchases and burns.

However, token burns do not guarantee higher prices. HYPE’s value remains dependent on market demand, circulating supply, competing trading platforms and broader cryptocurrency conditions. Future token emissions and contributor unlocks must also be considered when assessing its supply dynamics.

How Does HYPE Staking Work?

Hyperliquid uses delegated proof of stake, allowing token holders to help secure the network without running their own validator infrastructure.

Users can transfer HYPE into their staking balance through HyperCore and delegate tokens to an active validator. Rewards depend on network staking conditions and validator commissions rather than a fixed guaranteed interest rate.

Delegations have an initial one-day lockup, while transferring unstaked funds back to a spot balance involves a seven-day withdrawal period.

Staking can also provide trading fee discounts, creating an additional incentive for users who actively trade on Hyperliquid. Nevertheless, staking involves exposure to HYPE price volatility, validator performance and temporary restrictions on liquidity.

How to Buy and Store HYPE

HYPE can be purchased through Hyperliquid’s native spot market or supported centralized cryptocurrency exchanges. Its availability expanded in September 2026 when Binance introduced HYPE spot trading against several trading pairs.

Users should distinguish between holding HYPE on HyperCore, which supports native spot trading and staking, and holding it on HyperEVM, where it functions as the gas token for smart contracts.

Compatible self-custody wallets can interact with HyperEVM, although transferring assets between execution environments requires using supported network procedures.

Checking the correct network and token representation before transferring funds is essential, as unsupported deposits or incorrect transfers can result in losses.

Risks and Limitations

Hyperliquid Risks and Limitations

Hyperliquid combines blockchain transparency with high-performance trading infrastructure, but its technical and financial risks should not be overlooked.

Leveraged perpetual futures can trigger rapid liquidations, particularly during volatile market conditions. Third-party HIP-3 markets introduce additional considerations involving oracle accuracy, market liquidity and deployer conduct.

HyperEVM applications also carry smart contract and integration risks, while the validator set, protocol governance and concentration of influence remain important considerations when evaluating decentralization.

For HYPE holders, token unlocks, trading-volume fluctuations and competition from centralized exchanges and other decentralized derivatives platforms can influence demand and market value. Regulatory restrictions may also limit access to certain trading products in different jurisdictions.

Is Hyperliquid More Than a Decentralized Exchange?

Hyperliquid has developed from a specialized derivatives platform into a blockchain infrastructure supporting spot trading, leveraged markets, smart contracts and increasingly diverse financial applications.

Its distinguishing feature is the integration of trading liquidity and programmable applications within a single network. HYPE connects these components through staking, gas fees, market deployment requirements and a fee-driven token-burning mechanism.

The project’s long-term position will depend on its ability to sustain liquidity, attract developers, maintain network security and compete in an increasingly crowded on-chain trading market.
